Parking and access in Barking

Much of Barking now sits inside a controlled parking zone, and the council has been extending the zones street by street. The operating hours differ from zone to zone, sometimes sharply. On a zoned street a removal lorry cannot legally wait in a resident bay, so the practical answer is a bay suspension: the council reserves the bays outside your home for the day. The bays here are five metres long, so a single bay never covers a 7.5 tonne lorry. Reserve two bays, not one, and it needs room to work.

Barking and Dagenham charges for suspensions per bay, per day, plus a flat administration charge. Applications need at least five working days’ notice, and the council asks for longer in some cases. Fees are not refundable if dates change, and the council can site the bays up to 50 metres from your address, which usually still leaves the lorry close to the door. Applying is technically the resident’s job, because the council needs your details and payment. But you do not have to handle it alone. Not every street needs a suspension, and it is one of the first things we check at survey. If you do not need to pay the council, we will not book one. The A13 through the south of the borough and the A406 North Circular, which ends its run here, are TfL red routes for much of their length, where stopping is restricted at the best of times, so on those streets the plan is usually a side-road bay nearby rather than a suspension outside the door.

The housing matters as much as the kerb. On the Becontree estate streets many houses have a front drive, and where the lorry can stand on it the suspension question disappears; we check that at survey before you spend anything with the council. Around the old town by the abbey the Victorian terraces bring narrow front doors and turning stairs, and we protect them with floor coverings and doorframe guards on every job. In the new blocks at Barking Riverside and the regenerated Gascoigne streets, the concierge books the service lift and the loading bay runs to a window, so we flag the rules at survey and arrive inside the slot.
