A four-bed Georgian terrace with a staircase turn on every landing, a basement kitchen and no parking outside the door is a different shape of job altogether: bigger crew, larger lorry, two suspended bays at each end and the full day. Your own quote will sit somewhere on that spectrum, and the survey is what places it.

Parking and access in Camden

Much of Camden sits inside a controlled parking zone, and the operating hours differ from zone to zone, sometimes street by street. On a zoned street a removal lorry cannot legally wait in a resident bay, so the practical answer is a parking suspension: the council reserves the bays outside your home for the day. Reserve two bays, not one. A 7.5 tonne lorry takes up about a bay and a half on its own, and it needs room to work.

Camden charges for suspensions by the space, by the day. A single bay for a single day currently costs £79.63, and the daily rate rises in tiers the longer the suspension runs, up to £151.34, so two bays for a day is the number to put in the budget. If you are moving home, one break: Camden waives the first day’s space charge for house moves, up to three consecutive spaces, and the short-notice charge does not apply. The administration charge still applies, so the day-one cost is a fraction of the headline rate. To avoid the council’s short-notice charge you want the application in more than seventeen days ahead. Applying is technically the resident’s job, because the council needs your details and payment. But you do not have to handle it alone. Not every street needs a suspension, and it is one of the first things we check at survey. If you do not need to pay the council, we will not book one. A few of the main roads are TfL red routes, where stopping is restricted at the best of times, so on those streets the plan is usually a side-road bay or a goods vehicle bay nearby rather than a suspension outside the door.

The building itself matters as much as the kerb. The mansion blocks around Swiss Cottage, Belsize Park and Camden Town often want moves booked with the management, restrict which entrance goods can pass through, and set their own hours for communal areas, so we check those rules before the day and work to them. The Georgian terraces in the conservation streets have narrow front doors and turning stairs, and we protect them with floor coverings and doorframe guards on every job. Around Camden Town and Chalk Farm, weekend market and tourist pressure chokes the streets from Friday to Sunday, so for addresses near the market we will usually suggest a weekday, or at least a route and timing that avoid the one-way system and the school-run squeeze.
