Parking and access in Croydon

Much of the borough closer in sits inside controlled parking zones, and the operating hours differ from zone to zone, sometimes street by street. On a zoned street a removal lorry cannot legally wait in a resident bay during controlled hours, so the practical answer is a bay suspension: the council reserves the bays outside your home for the day. Reserve two bays, not one. A 7.5 tonne lorry takes up about a bay and a half on its own, and it needs room to work.

Croydon splits its resident charges by zone. A bay outside the central controlled parking zone costs £35 per day, and bays inside the central zone cost £46 per day, with a £46 administration charge on top. The council asks for a minimum of ten working days’ notice, the charge has to be paid before the suspension is put in place, and every request is subject to availability, so an application that lands inside two weeks is not guaranteed anything. Not every street needs a suspension, and it is one of the first things we check at survey. If you do not need to pay the council, we will not book one. The A23 along Purley Way is a TfL red route, where stopping is restricted at the best of times, so for addresses fronting it the plan is usually a side-road bay nearby rather than a suspension outside the door.

The building matters as much as the kerb. The towers around East Croydon and George Street want moves booked with the building management, with the service lift reserved and loading run to a window, so we check those rules before the day and work to them. The Victorian terraces in the older streets have narrow front doors and turning stairs, and we protect them with floor coverings and doorframe guards on every job. In the semis out towards Purley and Sanderstead it is the extensions that set the job: loft conversions add a flight and a tight turn at the top, and wardrobes that went up in pieces come down the same way. And the tram cuts straight across the town centre on rails a lorry cannot cross, so the route in is chosen for the vehicle, not just the map.
