To give you a sense of job shapes rather than numbers we cannot honestly quote from a distance: a two-bed conversion flat with a suspended bay outside typically needs a morning crew, with the suspension booked for a few hours either side. A four-bed Georgian townhouse over five floors, with a staircase turn on every landing, a basement kitchen and a garden-square carry at both ends, is a different shape of job altogether: bigger crew, larger lorry, two suspended bays at each end and the full day. Your own quote will sit somewhere on that spectrum, and the survey is what places it.

Parking and access in Islington

Most of Islington sits inside a controlled parking zone, and the operating hours differ from zone to zone, sometimes street by street. On a zoned street a removal lorry cannot legally wait in a resident bay, so the practical answer is a parking suspension: the council reserves the bays outside your home for the day. Reserve two bays, not one. A 7.5 tonne lorry takes up about a bay and a half on its own, and it needs room to work.

Islington charges a flat fee for the first day that covers the whole bay, then switches to a per-space daily rate from day two, and the per-space rate rises again from day three onwards. A single-day suspension for a single-day move is still by far the cheapest shape. For most bays the application needs to be in at least fourteen days before the suspension starts, and pay-by-phone bays need ten days, so Islington rewards an earlier booking than most boroughs. Before you pay for any of that: Islington lets you park outside your home free of charge when you are moving home. A branded removal lorry or a hire van can wait on a single yellow line or in a resident bay for as long as continuous loading takes, and if there is no space near your address at all, that is when the suspension becomes worth the fee. Applying is technically the resident’s job, because the council needs your details and payment. But you do not have to handle it alone. Not every street needs a suspension, and it is one of the first things we check at survey. If you do not need to pay the council, we will not book one. A few of the main roads are TfL red routes, where stopping is restricted at the best of times, so on those streets the plan is usually a side-road bay or a goods vehicle bay nearby rather than a suspension outside the door.

The building itself matters as much as the kerb. The tall Georgian townhouses around Barnsbury, Canonbury and the garden squares have narrow front doors and turning stairs, and we protect them with floor coverings and doorframe guards on every job. The mansion blocks and ex-local flats often want moves booked with the management or the lift reserved in a slot, and we work to those rules rather than against them. And around Upper Street and Angel, weekend crowds and the one-way system both argue for a weekday, or at least a route and timing that avoid the worst of it.
